Fifty years ago, a remarkable guitar, once owned by Jimmy Page, was handed out for free in a magazine contest; today, experts predict it will make over $67,000 at auction.

"Jimmy Page's generously donated guitar from half a century ago, a competition prize in a magazine, now anticipated to fetch an impressive $67,000 at auction"

In 1974, legendary guitarist Jimmy Page gave away a prized possession - his 1957 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 electric guitar - as a competition prize in the New Musical Express magazine. The winner of that competition, Charles Reid from Hornsey, North London, has now seen the value of that guitar skyrocket.

The guitar, which Page bought in Nashville for about £200 (~$450) in 1972, is expected to sell for anywhere between $40,359 and $67,265 (£30,000 and £50,000) at auction on September 9. The auction is being handled by the Gardiner Houlgate auction house.

Charles Reid kept the guitar until September 1990 and later sold it to Phil O'Donoghue, a guitarist in a '70s band called Wild Angels, for £2,000 (~$2,700). The guitar is now being sold by the family of Phil O'Donoghue.

The guitar's value has greatly appreciated over the years due to its historical and collectible value. This increase in value is reflected in the auction's expected price, which is a far cry from the few hundred dollars Page initially paid for it.

Jimmy Page's guitars are highly sought after by collectors, investors, and fans of Led Zeppelin. Recently, Page announced the Sundragon Nymph, a boutique, Page-co-founded brand's smallest-footprint, low-wattage combo.

Copies of the New Musical Express magazine showing the competition for the guitar and a photo of Page giving it to the winner, Charles Reid, are available. The auction of this iconic guitar promises to be a significant event for music memorabilia collectors.
