Kiel's First Public Hydrogen Refueling Station Opens, Boosting Sustainable Transport
Kiel's first public hydrogen refueling station has opened, marking a significant step in the region's shift towards sustainable transportation. Minister President Daniel Günther inaugurated the facility, part of the HY.Kiel project initiated by GP Joule and funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport.
The HY.Kiel plant, now operational after a five-year planning phase and one year of construction, can produce 180 tons of green hydrogen annually using its 2 MW electrolyzer. This hydrogen will be distributed through 350-bar and 700-bar refueling points, serving buses, trucks, and cars. The project is scalable and can be expanded if necessary.
The HY.Kiel project builds on the success of the eFarm project in North Friesland, which has been operating production facilities and refueling stations for years. GP Joule, an integrated energy provider, spearheaded this new initiative. In full operation, the HY.Kiel plant aims to supply up to 20 hydrogen trucks, 5 buses, and 10 cars, preventing 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Autokraft, a subsidiary of DB Regio Bus Nord, plans to integrate two fuel cell buses into the public transport system of the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The ceremonial opening of the hydrogen refueling station took place on September 12, with test operations commencing on the same day.
The HY.Kiel project, funded with 5.5 million euros from the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, demonstrates the region's commitment to clean energy. With the successful launch of this plant, Kiel takes a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable mobility.
