Lambda Synthetics' PolyPulse might be an unsightly innovation, but it could potentially liberate music producers from the confines of the 16-step grid.
The Lambda Synthetics PolyPulse, unveiled at the Superbooth trade show in 2023, is a groundbreaking instrument that combines the realms of sequencing, sound design, and performance into a single, innovative package.
This groovebox and algorithmic performance workstation boasts five independent tracks, each equipped with its own algorithmic sequencer, polyphonic sound engine, audio effects chain, and a dedicated XY touchpad for real-time control.
The PolyPulse's sequencer treats rhythm and pitch independently. Rhythms are programmed via an algorithmic system using four independent pulses per track that generate complex, evolving polyrhythms using various pattern-shaping parameters. Pitches are assigned globally from a shared note list that can be reversed or randomized, giving flexibility in melodic programming.
The instrument includes five distinct sound engines spanning subtractive synthesis, FM, additive, granular, and physical modeling. Additionally, there is a quad engine able to host four configurable mini sound engines for drum synthesis and stereo sample playback, supported by 26GB onboard memory.
Each track and the master bus support four effects slots with effects like compression, reverb, delay, EQ, filter, drive, and tape emulation. Modulation is highly flexible via a per-voice modulation system that can assign multi-waveform LFOs, AD envelopes, 16-step sequencers, or randomizers to any target in the sound engines, effects, or modulators.
A unique feature of the PolyPulse is its song mode, which allows the arrangement of patterns using an algorithmic cue system, supporting both live performance and composition workflows.
The PolyPulse offers a deeply algorithmic approach to sequencing and sound design, combining multiple synthesis methods, advanced modulation, and a creative effects system optimized for evolving and complex rhythmic and melodic structures.
Priced at £1769/$2099, the PolyPulse is now available for order in the UK/EU from Thomann and in the US from Perfect Circuit. With its industrial design and refreshingly innovative take on sequencing and arrangement, the PolyPulse could open up a whole new world of performative possibilities for musicians and sound designers alike.
