Launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI featured parental controls in September
In a recent development, OpenAI and Meta have announced changes to their chatbot platforms in response to growing concerns about their impact on children.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched an investigation into the potential negative effects of chatbots on children and adolescents, following several lawsuits accusing chatbots of driving children to self-harm and suicide. Reuters reported that Meta's internal standards allowed its chatbots to engage in romantic conversations with children, which has led to tragic consequences for some users.
In response, OpenAI announced plans for parental controls at the end of August. The new measures will direct users under 18 to an age-appropriate version of ChatGPT, blocking graphic and sexual content. OpenAI noted that their security measures are most effective with normal, short interactions. However, they acknowledged that prolonged engagement with the chatbot can bypass these security measures.
Meta is also taking steps to ensure the safety of its users, particularly children. The company is currently reviewing its rules regarding chatbot interactions to ensure they do not allow inappropriate conversations with children. Meta will also introduce parental controls, allowing parents to set hours when the chatbot cannot be used and link their account to their teenager's account via email.
In addition, parents will receive notifications if their teenager is in a high-stress situation. In rare cases, this version may involve law enforcement. Meta emphasized that such dialogues with children should never have been allowed, stating that the examples and notes in the standards were "erroneous."
The report from Meta to American senators is expected to address the impact of its products on children and the effectiveness of parental controls. The updated plans for ChatGPT by OpenAI may include stricter measures to prevent inappropriate interactions with children.
The investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is ongoing, and the regulatory agency is expected to provide a report on its findings soon. American senators have also requested a report from Meta on the impact of its products on children and the effectiveness of parental controls.
As the use of chatbots continues to grow, the focus on their safety, particularly for children, is becoming increasingly important. Both OpenAI and Meta are working to ensure their platforms provide a safe and positive environment for all users.
