The Spark Accelerator Programme, a collaboration between Safaricom, M-PESA Africa, and Sumitomo Corporation, is now accepting applications for its second phase in 2025. This programme, designed to assist early-stage startups in Kenya, offers a range of benefits to bold entrepreneurs.

Application Process

The application process for the 2025 Safaricom Spark Accelerator is now open. Interested startups need to apply online by submitting their business details, team information, product description, and how the startup can leverage the accelerator. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2025 (previously May 31, but check current deadlines for phase two).

Typically, the selection involves screening of applications, interviews, and evaluation based on innovation, scalability, and potential impact.

Benefits

Participants in the Spark Accelerator Programme will gain access to mentorship from industry experts and Safaricom partners, including PwC, Vodacom, and AWS. Networking opportunities will connect startups with investors and business leaders. Potential for seed funding is also available to help scale startups.

The programme also provides support in refining business models, testing innovations, and preparing for market entry. Participants will have exposure to the Safaricom ecosystem and its technology infrastructure, such as M-PESA Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

Startups must be operational and typically at an early or growth stage with a product or service related to technology, especially innovations that can integrate with or leverage Safaricom’s platforms. Founders and teams should demonstrate bold, scalable business ideas with clear market potential.

While the programme targets Kenyan startups, it may also include startups from the broader East Africa region depending on the cohort structure.

For detailed application steps, timelines, and updated eligibility criteria, candidates should refer to Safaricom’s official announcements or the dedicated Spark Accelerator website. Teams with diverse leadership, particularly those with female founders or leaders, are strongly encouraged to apply.

In addition, participants will have access to AWS Activate credits of up to $25,000 and product and technology support such as Daraja and M-PESA Open APIs. Startups will have the opportunity to tap into Safaricom's customer base of over 30 million.
