Li Auto introduces the Li i8, a six-seater SUV, in the heated battery electric vehicle (BEV) market.
China's BEV Market Heats Up with the Launch of Li Auto's Li i8 and Onvo L90
The battery electric vehicle (BEV) market in China is seeing a significant shake-up, as Li Auto unveils its first electric SUV, the Li i8, and Onvo introduces the L90. Both vehicles are family-oriented SUVs, aiming to cater to similar customers [1][2][4].
The Li i8, Li Auto's second BEV model, is set to challenge Tesla's upcoming six-seat Model Y L. It comes with a standard dual-motor setup, delivering a total power output of 400 kW, and boasts a CLTC range of 670 kilometers with its entry-level 90.1-kWh battery pack [3]. The Li i8 measures 5,085 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,740 mm in height [5].
The Li i8 also stands out with its latest autonomous driving architecture, MindVLA (Visual-Language-Action), and the VLA driver large language model, which will be delivered with the Li i8 in August [6]. It supports a 5C charging rate, making it efficient for quick recharging [7].
In comparison, the Onvo L90, which started at RMB 279,900 before any potential price reductions, is a more affordable option. Measuring 5,145 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and 1,786 mm in height, the Onvo L90 is slightly larger than the Li i8 [2][4].
Li Auto has been working to strengthen its charging network, promising 2,500 supercharging stations for the Li i8's launch, with the current number having reached 3,000 [8]. Deliveries of the Li i8 will begin on August 20 [9].
The BEV market is becoming increasingly competitive, with Tesla, Li Auto, and Onvo all vying for a share. In June, Li Auto delivered 36,279 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 24.06 percent [10]. Despite the decrease, the launch of the Li i8 and the upcoming six-seat Model Y L is expected to bring renewed interest to the BEV market in China.
