Maintaining the 8-day mechanism of a Seth Thomas clock

Known as a "marriage" in the field, this hybrid timepiece is a testament to the blending of two iconic American clockmakers, the Waterbury Clock Company and Seth Thomas.
The Waterbury Clock Company, founded in the mid-19th century, was renowned for producing affordable and decorative clocks. On the other hand, Seth Thomas, active in the 19th and early 20th centuries, was celebrated for its quality movements. When a Seth Thomas movement found its place within a Waterbury Wren case, collectors refer to the resulting clock as a "marriage."
While these "marriage" clocks may not hold the same collector value as factory-original Waterbury Wren clocks with original Waterbury movements, they are historically intriguing. Their worth can vary but is generally modest, depending on factors such as the clock's condition, aesthetics, rarity, working order, and historical appeal.
Upon closer inspection of this particular Waterbury Wren and Seth Thomas "marriage," no worn gear teeth were observed, suggesting careful maintenance. A 5-step block jig was used to stabilise the escape wheel bridge during drilling, ensuring precision in the work. A block from a staking set was employed to punch the bushing from the inside, stabilising it.
Several bushings needed to be replaced, including both second wheels, the governor, both front and back, and the escape wheel bridge bushing. The mainsprings looked to be in good shape, still bearing the original ST trademarks. The work on the bushings was well done, although the arrows scratched into the plate were disliked.
The movement runs well at the moment, but the regulating worm gear is missing and needs to be installed. The movement has an overly complicated speed regulating feature, adding to its unique character. Interestingly, the clock's dial pan may have been added later.
Despite questionable repairs and intriguing changes due to being a "marriage," this Waterbury Wren clock with a Seth Thomas movement is a captivating example of the blend of two iconic American clockmakers. Its value may not rival that of an original Waterbury Wren clock with an original Waterbury movement, but its historical significance and unique features make it a valuable addition to any collection.
