Pioneering Change: SMS Leads the Charge in Metal Industry's Green Revolution

Metal sector regeneration: SMS positions itself as a pivotal player - Metal Industry's Remodeling: SMS Plays a Crucial Role

Let's cut to the chase—SMS, a family-owned plant engineering powerhouse, is stepping up to lead the metal industry's shift towards a greener, climate-neutral future. And they're doing it right from the get-go, as Jochen Burg, SMS CEO, puts it, "We're in the thick of it, spearheading some leading projects worldwide for the decarbonization of the metal industry. That's our key role."

Take, for example, the groundbreaking steelworks brewing up in Northern Sweden. SMS is teaming up with Stegra to construct an entirely hydrogen-powered plant. Climate-neutral steel production is set to go live by the end of 2026, and SMS's stake's worth around a whopping billion euros! Plus, they've locked down a 12-year service contract with Stegra, though the contract's worth has been kept under wraps.

Stepping foot into Germany, SMS is building a state-of-the-art steelmaking facility for Thyssenkrupp in Duisburg. This spanking new plant will churn out climate-friendly steel with a direct reduction plant producing sponge iron and two melting plants. The order volume for SMS comes in at a hefty 1.8 billion euros. Construction should kick off this fall, with the direct reduction plant firing up gradually from 2027.

The numbers speak for themselves: SMS Group saw a successful 2024, with operating profit skyrocketing from -20 million euros to a mighty +153 million euros. They've slashed costs, axed loss-making ventures, and streamlined efficiency across the board. Revenue jumped by 18% to a cool four billion euros. For the current fiscal year, they're expecting revenue to stay steady, while profits are poised for another jump.

SMS Group: a worldwide leader in building rolling mills and casting plants for the steel and aluminum industries. They boast a global workforce of over 13,500, with about 5,000 calling Germany, particularly North Rhine-Westphalia, home. The sole owner of SMS? None other than the Weiss Foundation.

So, there you have it—SMS, a game-changer in the metal industry, boldly leading the way towards a green, carbon-neutral future. Their innovative projects, commitment to sustainability, and pioneering partnerships prove they're not just talking the talk but walking the walk.

  1. SMS's comprehensive community policy includes a focus on environmental-science, as they aspire to lead the metal industry in the implementation of vocational training programs that targeted towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting climate-change mitigation strategies.
  2. In their quest to revolutionize the metal industry, SMS is investing in cutting-edge technology and finance to scale up their vocational training programs, aiming to equip employees with the necessary skills to effectively navigate the industry's transition towards green and environmentally-friendly practices.
  3. As a demonstration of their influence in the industry, SMS is partnering with various companies and institutions to establish centers for climate-change research and education, leveraging the latest breakthroughs in science to drive sustainable practices and innovations in metal production.
