MSI Announces EOTF Boost Firmware Update for Enhanced QD-OLED HDR Performance

MSI, a leading manufacturer of gaming monitors, has announced that it will be rolling out a new firmware update this month for several of its QD-OLED gaming monitors. This update, known as EOTF Boost, aims to improve HDR performance on these displays.

The EOTF Boost mode is designed to deliver the best visual experience from both the official HDR Peak 1000 and HDR True Black 500 modes simultaneously. It achieves this by dynamically counteracting panel dimming under various Average Picture Level (APL) conditions, resulting in a consistent visual experience that combines peak brightness with deep blacks.

Several MSI models, including the MAG 322UP E16, MAG 272QP X50, MAG 271QP X28, and MAG 272QPW X28, will be receiving the EOTF Boost update. New QD-OLED models from MSI released now will support EOTF Boost out of the box, while older models such as the MSI MPG 321URX are scheduled to receive the update gradually starting in August 2025.

The official HDR True Black modes are less susceptible to brightness dimming issues but lack the higher brightness functionality of Peak HDR modes. EOTF Boost addresses these visual flaws found in some official HDR modes, providing a more balanced viewing experience.

It is possible that MSI's whole QD-OLED lineup could receive the update to the EOTF Boost mode. However, MSI did not clarify which specific monitors or how many monitors will be getting the new proprietary HDR mode.

EOTF Boost delivers higher brightness under the same APL conditions compared to HDR 1000, making it an attractive option for users seeking improved HDR performance on their MSI QD-OLED monitors.

It is worth noting that EOTF Boost is not an official mode endorsed by VESA, meaning it won't be adopted by other vendors. Other vendors like Asus and Gigabyte might develop their own interpretations of EOTF Boost in the future.

MSI shared a press release about the EOTF Boost mode on Reddit last month, generating excitement among the gaming community. This update marks a significant step forward in MSI's commitment to delivering innovative technologies to enhance the gaming experience for its users.

The EOTF Boost update, a revolutionary HDR technology, will enhance the performance of MSI's QD-OLED gaming monitors, improving visual experiences by providing a more balanced viewing experience between official HDR modes. This update, exclusive to MSI, will be rolled out to several models like the MAG 322UP E16 and MAG 272QP X50, with other models expected to receive it in the future.

As more and more smart-home devices incorporate gadgets powered by advanced technology, the gaming community eagerly awaits updates like the EOTF Boost, marking MSI's continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of HDR performance with innovative technologies.
