MTN and Synamedia collaborate on establishing a streamer across Africa
In a significant move, MTN Group, a leading African mobile network operator, has partnered with Synamedia, a video software provider, to develop a new streaming platform for mobile and fixed broadband subscribers across Africa.
The strategic alignment between the two entities is aimed at empowering communities and driving industry progress in Africa. The partnership, spearheaded by Synamedia CEO, Paul Segre, will enable smartphone owners across Africa to enjoy innovative linear TV and on-demand video.
Selorm Adadevoh, Group Chief Commercial Officer at MTN Group, stated that the partnership aims to transform video consumption in Africa with high-quality, accessible, and relevant content. The streaming platform developed by MTN and Synamedia will offer a diverse range of viewing options, meeting the evolving preferences of audiences throughout the continent.
Each market will benefit from a curated content strategy, adapted to local cultures, languages, and viewing habits. The platform will utilize Synamedia's cloud-based technologies to deliver both linear television and VoD content.
The streaming platform will provide various monetization models, including subscriptions, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted advertising. This move is expected to drive new revenues for MTN, according to Paul Segre.
It's important to note that this partnership does not involve direct-from-satellite broadband, unlike some initiatives in Pakistan and India. There is also no indication of regulatory issues with foreign D2D satellites over Africa, unlike in India.
The partnership between MTN and Synamedia does not aim to disrupt the US cellular sector, unlike the potential impact of Starlink. Nor does it involve Starlink or AST SpaceMobile, as seen in discussions about their race for cellular consumers.
The future of entertainment in Africa is being shaped by this partnership. With its focus on localized content and innovative technology, the new streaming platform is set to redefine video consumption in Africa, making it more accessible and relevant to a wider audience.
