NBCUniversal, YouTube TV Avert Blackout with Multi-Year Carriage Deal

NBCUniversal and YouTube TV have averted a potential blackout by reaching a multi-year carriage agreement. This deal comes amidst growing tension between programmers and distributors over content 'ingestion' into third-party platforms like YouTube TV.

The agreement, signed on November 5, 2021, covers NBCUniversal's entire network portfolio, including NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, and others. This ensures continued access to these networks on YouTube TV.

NBC Sports Network will remain available on YouTube TV later this year, and Universal Pictures films will continue to be available for purchase or rental on platforms like YouTube. Additionally, Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service, will be offered as a subscription through YouTube's Primetime Channels, expanding its reach across Google's platforms.

Both parties recognised the potential disruption a blackout could cause, particularly during the NFL season and the launch of new primetime shows. This deal may serve as a template for future carriage negotiations between programmers and platforms like YouTube TV.

The multi-year carriage agreement between NBCUniversal and YouTube TV secures continued access to a wide range of content for subscribers. Both sides avoided a potential blackout, and the deal could pave the way for future negotiations in the industry.
