New 'Background Screaming' Scam Uses AI to Clone Voices, Demand Ransom

Authorities warn of a new scam, dubbed the 'Background Screaming Scam', where fraudsters use AI to clone voices and play disturbing noises to create panic. Gemini victims are tricked into believing a loved one is in danger, with scammers demanding ransom.

In this scam, con artists use inexpensive AI software to clone voices from short audio samples. They then pretend to have kidnapped someone you know, playing disturbing background noises like screaming to make the call seem real. The goal? To demand ransom and manipulate victims into acting quickly out of fear.

To protect yourself, ignore and hang up from unknown numbers. If you suspect a call is a scam, hang up and call the person in question using a known number to confirm their safety. If you believe there's real danger, call 911 immediately. To add another layer of security, create secret passwords with family members to confirm identity. However, be cautious as these passwords can be compromised if shared outside the family.

Scammers also use AI to generate realistic phishing emails, establish fake websites, and create convincing voice or video impersonations (deepfakes). To shield yourself, register on the National Do Not Call List, use apps or phone features to block numbers, and never use a phone number supplied by a potential scammer or give them money or information.

While there's no verified information linking a group called 'Jenemannschaft' to a 'Screaming-Ruf' fraud in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, authorities urge caution. Always stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and remember that scammers thrive on fear and emotion. By staying informed and taking precautions, you can protect yourself and loved ones from falling victim to these deceptive schemes.
