New Center Aims to Revolutionize Solar Industry with Perovskite Panels
A new center, led by Sandia National Laboratories, has been established to boost perovskite-based photovoltaic technologies. The Department of Energy awarded $14 million for this initiative, aiming to enhance understanding and reliability of these promising solar panels.
The center, involving institutions like Sandia, NREL, and international partners, will focus on performance, reliability, and bankability. Within the first year, it plans to test at least 30 perovskite modules outdoors to set a common assessment standard.
Perovskite solar cells have shown great potential, with efficiencies reaching 25%, comparable to silicon cells. However, their long-term reliability needs thorough evaluation. The center will conduct accelerated testing and real-world field tests to determine this. The ultimate goal is to create bankability roadmaps for at least two perovskite-based companies within two years.
The new center, led by Sandia National Laboratories, is poised to revolutionize the solar industry by improving perovskite-based photovoltaic technologies. With a focus on performance, reliability, and bankability, it aims to quantify risks and pave the way for wider adoption of these cheaper, less energy-intensive solar panels.
