Nikon Patents New Z-Mount System for Enhanced Professional Cinema Functionality

Nikon has patented a new system for its Z-mount, designed to enhance professional cinema functionality. The system includes parallel communication paths between the lens and camera body, enabling real-time updates and improved performance.

The patented system allows for faster autofocus tracking, smoother iris transitions, and rock-solid stabilization. This is achieved by running two separate channels: a command channel clocked by the camera and a hot-line telemetry channel clocked by the lens, capable of running at up to 20 MHz.

Nikon has optimized the terminal placement in the Z-mount to ensure high-voltage power pins are isolated from delicate data lines and to account for wear and tear. This patent is part of Nikon's broader strategy to push Z-mount electronics further and sustain a professional cinema line for the long haul.

The patent uses the term 'accessory' to cover teleconverters, extension rings, and smart adapters, suggesting that the Z Cinema could eventually integrate PL or third-party cine glass with full metadata support. Earlier patents hinted at massive autofocus gains during movement and a potential RAW workflow tied to RED's technology.

With this new patent, Nikon strengthens its position in the professional cinema market. The enhanced Z-mount functionality puts it in direct competition with other industry leaders such as Sony, Panasonic Lumix, and Viltrox. As Nikon continues to innovate, professionals in the cinema industry can expect improved performance and expanded compatibility from the Z-mount system.
