Nio Unveils Ambitious Plans for Third-Generation ES8 Electric SUV
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, Nio, has announced an expansion of its sales team in preparation for the traditional peak sales season in the third and fourth quarters and the launch of the higher-end ES9 SUV next year. The company has also welcomed professionals from the real estate, insurance, and financial sectors to join Nio and its sub-brand Onvo, with many undergoing intensive training.
The third-generation ES8, Nio's large electric SUV, is set to make its debut on August 20. Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li previously announced that the third-generation ES8 would be unveiled later this month. The new ES8 marks an important upgrade in Nio’s SUV lineup. Built on Nio’s latest NT 3.0 architecture, the same as the flagship ET9 sedan, the third-generation ES8 emphasizes advancements in battery and autonomous driving technology. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined peak power of 520 kW (697 hp), enabling acceleration from 0–100 km/h in approximately 4.1 seconds.
Equipped with a 102 kWh ternary NMC battery pack, the third-generation ES8 promises an official CLTC range of up to 635 kilometers. The battery supports swappable technology with swaps completed in approximately 3 minutes. The vehicle also features a 925V high-voltage system that allows ultra-fast charging at 5C (250 km range in 5 minutes) and peak charging power of 600 kW.
The third-generation ES8 is larger than its predecessor, with dimensions measuring: - Length: 5,280 mm (+181 mm compared to previous generation) - Width: 2,010 mm - Height: 1,800 mm - Wheelbase: 3,250 mm
It includes a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, blackened pillars, and streamlined styling similar to the ET9. The vehicle will be available in six- and seven-seat versions.
The third-generation ES8 also boasts enhanced autonomous capabilities, featuring Nio’s AQUILA Super Sensing System comprising front and side LiDARs, 4D imaging radar, and its in-house Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip—the same chip used in the ET9 sedan. It supports Nio’s World Model ecosystem introduced with the ET9.
The starting price of the third-generation ES8, Nio's first mass-produced model, is RMB 498,000 ($69,380) including the battery pack. This places it slightly above the current generation ES8, which starts at RMB 448,000 ($65,620). The new ES8 does not have electric running boards, as confirmed by CEO William Li.
Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) significantly expanded its sales team in the past month, with over 800 sales professionals with experience at Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Volvo joining the company. The official launch of the third-generation ES8 is scheduled for Nio Day 2025 next month. The exchange rate is RMB 7.1775 per USD.
