Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to introduce its third-generation ES8—a full-size flagship electric SUV—later this month. The vehicle, built on Nio's new NT3.0 platform, promises significant advancements in size, battery technology, charging speed, and intelligent features.

According to spy shots, the third-generation ES8 is undergoing road tests, and it appears to be larger than its predecessor. The SUV measures 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm. These dimensions make it more spacious than the first-generation ES8, which had dimensions of 5,099 mm, 1,989 mm, 1,750 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,070 mm.

The key technical specifications of the third-generation ES8 include a 102 kWh battery pack, delivering a CLTC range of approximately 635 km. This represents an increase of about 30 km compared to the previous generation. The vehicle also adopts Nio’s next-generation 900V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast 5C charging. This allows the ES8 to regain around 250 km of range in just 5 minutes at peak charging rates, with peak power transfer up to 600 kW and maximum current reaching 765 amps.

The ES8 offers both six- and seven-seat configurations and emphasizes flexibility and durability with its battery system, supporting both ultra-fast charging and instant battery swapping for convenience and range assurance on long trips or daily commutes.

In terms of design and technology, the ES8 features a cutting-edge design with aggressive styling and a refined tech experience, indicative of its flagship status. It is a comprehensive upgrade over prior generations, notably improving range, charging efficiency, and intelligent system enhancements.

Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li revealed the plan for the third-generation ES8, emphasizing its strategic importance as the company's first mass-produced vehicle. Li also mentioned that the ES8 caters more to business attributes while also catering to the family market, whereas the Onvo L90, another Nio model, focuses more on family use.

Pricing details for the new third-gen ES8 have not been officially disclosed yet. However, the previous generation ES8 had a starting price of RMB 498,000 ($69,060) including the battery pack, serving as a reference point.

Nio will hold a product and technology event for the third-generation ES8 in late August, and the model will be available at stores in late August for public viewing. The third-generation ES8 will begin deliveries shortly after Nio Day 2025, which is scheduled for late September.

It is worth noting that the ES8's position as Nio's flagship SUV may be replaced by the higher-end ES9, which Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong stated could be launched in the first half of 2026.

In summary, the third-gen Nio ES8 boasts larger dimensions, a 102 kWh battery with approximately 635 km CLTC range, 900V electrical architecture with 5C ultra-fast charging capability, six- or seven-seat layouts, flexible battery swapping and charging options, advanced technology and styling updates, and a competitive positioning as a premium electric SUV combining size, range, rapid charging, and versatility.
