NWX Event Explores Modern Workplace: Purpose, Mindfulness, and Values

The New Work Experience (NWX) event in Hamburg, attended by around 2,000 guests, explored the workplace of today and tomorrow. Speakers, including Petra von Strombeck, Shi Heng Yi, and Petra Scharner-Wolff, discussed the importance of purpose, mindfulness, and self-efficacy in the modern workplace.

Petra von Strombeck, CEO of New Work SE, sees her company's purpose as motivation and orientation for employees. Meanwhile, Dr. Bernd Hufnagel, a leading neurologist, suggested microbreaks and perspective shifts to boost self-efficacy and mental health at work.

Shi Heng Yi, a Shaolin monk, highlighted the significance of Buddhist philosophy in today's workplace, emphasizing mindfulness and self-control. Petra Scharner-Wolff, board member of the Otto Group, believes purpose should be tangible and lived daily, encouraging employees to question it critically.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a rethinking of careers, with 40% of employed Germans and 50% of 30- to 39-year-olds considering a job change. Psychologist Prof. Dr. Ingo Hamm called for a culture of contradiction, where employees dare to challenge company values that don't align with their personal morals. Philosopher Richard David Precht echoed this, stating we're evolving from a work society to a meaning society, where everyone has the right to purpose.

The NWX event underscored the importance of purpose, mental well-being, and personal values in the modern workplace. As the pandemic continues to reshape careers, employees and employers alike are reevaluating what truly matters.
