Fraud Targeting Romanians: Here’s What You Need to Know

It seems like a majority of Romanians have fallen victim to online scams. According to Reveal Marketing Research, around 61% of the population has experienced some form of online fraud attempts. Here's a breakdown of the common consequences:

  1. Device Infection: Forty-two percent of victims saw their devices infected with malware or viruses.
  2. Monetary Loss: Thirty percent reported losing money due to these scams.
  3. Data Theft: Twenty-two percent had their personal data, such as banking information, passwords, or documents, stolen.

Interestingly, people aged 35-44 appear to be the most frequent targets of repeated scam attempts, with 49% reporting multiple experiences.

In light of these occurrences, it's clear that Romanians are becoming increasingly aware of the risks associated with online fraud. A staggering 68% of the population is now informed about these dangers. Some of the most recognizable types of online fraud include:

  1. Phishing Emails or Messages: Deceptive emails or messages that disguise as being from banks or other trustworthy sources, with 73% of Romanians able to identify these attempts.
  2. Social Media Scams: Scammers impersonating people or creating fake accounts that ask for money or personal data, with 72% of the population able to spot these scams.
  3. Fraudulent Phone Calls: Scammers posing as representatives from businesses or institutions, although 69% of Romanians can identify these calls.
  4. Fake Websites: Fraudulent websites that imitate well-known brands or offer misleading promotions and contests, with 53% of Romanians capable of recognizing these sites.

In terms of the impact of these fraud attempts, the loss of money remains the most common consequence, especially for young people aged 18-24. On the other hand, seniors over 55 seem to be more often targeted with malware or viruses. Men also appear to be more prone to personal data theft compared to women.

To protect themselves from these scams, Romanians have adopted various precautions. These include avoiding giving personal information in unsolicited messages, refusing to click on suspicious links, and checking the source of messages and websites they access. Furthermore, 42% of respondents use two-factor authentication for their accounts, and 41% use antivirus or security software. Senior citizens seem to be the most cautious online.

Marius Luican, General Manager of Reveal Marketing Research, states, "Online scams pose a significant risk, and brands and companies need to understand the needs and behaviors of users, as well as security trends, in order to offer them support."

Romanians believe that brands and companies can play a crucial role in protecting them from online fraud. Measures suggested include implementing systems to verify the authenticity of messages, running information and education campaigns about scams, and displaying more warnings on websites and apps about the risks of fraud.

In conclusion, while online scams are a growing concern in Romania, the population is becoming increasingly conscious of the risks and has taken steps to protect themselves. Brands and companies can contribute to this effort by implementing measures to safeguard their users' data and security.
