OpenAI's Orion: Advanced AI Model Coming December 2023

OpenAI has announced plans to release its latest advanced AI model, Orion, by December 2023. The company recently raised $6.6 billion in funding, valuing it at $157 billion. However, the model's release may be adjusted following a review by Microsoft developers in November.

Orion is designed for text understanding and generation, with multimodal capabilities that could potentially replace GPT-4. It will initially be offered to collaborating companies for unique feature and product development, not via ChatGPT.

The model was considered a transitional version before the official launch of GPT-5, which went live in August 2025. OpenAI is currently developing GPT Next, a model 100 times more powerful than previous versions, moving closer to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

OpenAI introduced the o1 language model in September 2023, using reinforcement learning for complex tasks. Meanwhile, the Superalignment group, responsible for AGI risk control and assessment, was shut down in May 2023. Following this, security expert Miles Brandage left OpenAI on October 23, 2023, after the disbandment of the AGI Readiness department.

OpenAI's Orion, set for release by December 2023, promises advanced text understanding and generation capabilities. While initially offered to collaborating companies, its impact on AI development is eagerly anticipated. The company continues to push the boundaries of AI, with GPT Next aiming to be 100 times more powerful than previous models, moving closer to AGI.
