Anker Nebula X1: A Premium Portable Projector with Stunning Image Quality
In the realm of portable projectors, Anker's Nebula X1 stands out as a high-end option, boasting a razor-sharp image and exceptional brightness. Although its price tag of around €3,000 may seem steep, the Nebula X1 offers a unique combination of ease of use, versatility, and top-tier performance that justifies the investment.
The Anker Nebula X1 is part of the company's growing portfolio of premium projectors, following in the footsteps of the Nebula Cosmos 4K SE. While sharing a similar boxy design, the X1 is larger and heavier, measuring 282 × 186 × 245.5 millimeters and weighing approximately 6.2 kilograms. This bulky frame houses a powerful device that can still be easily carried over short distances thanks to its wide, built-in handle.
Setting up and using the Nebula X1 is a breeze, requiring minimal effort. Simply place the projector on a flat surface or screw it onto a stable tripod, aim it at a wall or screen, press the power button, and lean back. The X1 will then automatically adjust the position and size of the projection, with its built-in gimbal allowing the lens to tilt up to 25 degrees. It also focuses the image and performs keystone correction, all without the need for manual adjustments in most cases.
The projector features Google TV built-in, offering a smart TV-like experience. Pre-installed apps include YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon, with a vast selection of additional apps available in the app store, including RTL. Two HDMI 2.1 ports enable connections to a receiver, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and other devices. Furthermore, the X1 has USB-C and USB-A ports, as well as an optical audio output, and supports streaming content from Android smartphones, iPhones, Macs, and Windows computers.
In terms of image quality, the Nebula X1 delivers a stunning performance, with nearly double the brightness compared to the Cosmos 4K SE. Anker claims a brightness of 3,500 ANSI lumens, although this peak is likely only achievable with HDR content. Nevertheless, the X1 performed well in non-darkened rooms during testing, as long as they weren't sunlit. For a truly cinematic experience, it's recommended to darken the room, where you'll be rewarded with a sharp image with vibrant but natural colors and crisp contrasts. The projection quality can indeed keep up with a good TV display.
Setup takes only a few minutes if you already have a Google account, and the Google Home app on your smartphone makes the process straightforward. The projector's remote control, which has buttons that light up when lifted, can be used for navigation, or the Nebula app on your smartphone can simplify text input, especially for searching for content.
While the Nebula X1 doesn't natively produce 4K, it upscales from HD resolution with AI help, barely noticeable during testing. It handles fast movements without visible blurriness or judder.
For gaming, the Nebula X1 offers a mode with extremely short lag, making it a strong companion for gaming consoles. However, automatic trapezoid correction must be sacrificed for low latency. The projector's sound isn't bad with two mid-range and two tweeters, but for better sound, connect speakers via Bluetooth or optical output, such as a soundbar. Anker offers two Bluetooth satellite boxes that can form a surround system with the X1, including two karaoke microphones, but that's an additional €750.
In conclusion, the Anker Nebula X1 is an excellent projector that impresses with its simple handling, great versatility, and outstanding, bright picture. However, at around €3,000, it's also incredibly expensive. Those who only want to watch in darkened rooms can also opt for the half-priced Cosmos 4K SE, which is almost as good.
