New Age in Air Traffic Services: Solita's Fintraffic Sky Unveiled

Solita, a German IT powerhouse, partners with Fintraffic to create a trailblazing platform for air traffic services, embracing both manned and unmanned aerial traffic.

Helsinki / Munich, June 2, 2025. Ever wondered how drones and airplanes will share the same skies? Solita, a bastion in tech and data, has teamed up with Fintraffic Air Navigation Services Ltd. (Fintraffic ANS) and AstraUTM to forge a bold new reality. Fintraffic Sky, the innovative air traffic management platform, serves as a digital hub for pilots, drone operators, customs, and border patrol – bridging the gap between traditional air traffic control and the fast-growing world of unmanned aviation.

Fintraffic Sky streamlines the submitting of flight plans and notifying authorities about intended airspace use, accommodating both piloted and drone-controlled vehicles. The platform offers real-time situational awareness, revealing active flights and reservation zones within Finnish airspace.

"This new service transforms the way we handle information and tools, reflecting our commitment to safety, modernity, and superior user experience," says Raine Luojus, CEO of Fintraffic ANS. "Fintraffic Sky aligns perfectly with our digital strategy, meeting the dynamics of the rapidly evolving aviation community."

Real-Time Airspace Visualization

Key functions grace Fintraffic Sky, such as real-time airspace visualization, cutting-edge flight planning tools, and connexion to the central reference database for aviation information (EAD) and Eurocontrol's Network Manager. The platform's architecture was designed through collaboration between Solita and AstraUTM, Thales' unmanned traffic management (UTM) pioneer.

"Our collaboration with Fintraffic was an interactive, collaborative journey," beams Asam Khan, CEO of AstraUTM. "It allowed us to develop tailor-made features that resonate with Fintraffic's ambitions, strengthening the future integration of air traffic management and UTM." Ossi Lindroos, CEO of Solita, chimes in: "As drones gain traction, integrated data platforms like Fintraffic Sky are pivotal to ensure their safe integration into the broader traffic ecosystem. Our platform delivers real-time data and ease of use for all airspace users."

In the coming stages, Fintraffic Sky is set to incorporate the full flight weather data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). This development will unlock exciting weather tools, intelligently designed for the unique needs of traditional and unmanned aviation. "We're thrilled to bring our regulated and commercial weather products to market through Fintraffic Sky, providing all airspace denizens with crucial meteorological data," notes Riikka Pusa, Head of Aviation and Defence at FMI.

Insights:

The integration of drones into existing air traffic control systems is an expanding field, with numerous companies pushing the boundaries ofair traffic management systems. These platforms aim to ensure safety, efficiency, and cooperation between manned and unmanned aerial vehicles. Key features, integration aspects, and expansion plans include:

  • Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) systems: Companies like High Lander and Dronetag are developing solutions focusing on real-time monitoring, flight planning, and deconfliction tools for drone traffic. These tools facilitate the safe operation of drones and manned aircraft in shared airspace.
  • AI and Automation in Air Traffic Control: Airbus's U-Space platform uses AI for air traffic control automation, enhancing real-time management and conflict resolution. These technologies help facilitate autonomous aircraft operations, reducing the workload for air traffic controllers.
  • Data Integration and Surveillance: Partnerships like High Lander and INVOLI merge real-time surveillance data on manned aviation with UTM infrastructure. This combination bolsters situational awareness and airspace safety by offering comprehensive coverage of both manned and unmanned aircraft.
  • Manned and Unmanned Traffic Unification: Developers are striving to create a united framework for managing both types of air traffic, incorporating surveillance data from different sources to ensure smooth cooperation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Platforms like High Lander's Vega CIS adhere to international standards, including EASA's U-space regulations, and support regulatory compliance for drone operations by delivering real-time updates on airspace restrictions and permissions.
  • Global Adoption: As drone usage increases in various domains, these platforms are poised for global expansion. Regulators worldwide are seeking solutions enabling the safe integration of drones into their airspaces.
  • Technological Advancements: The incorporation of AI, advanced surveillance technologies, and real-time data sharing will bolster the capabilities of these platforms, improving cybersecurity measures and protecting against digital threats in communications.
  • Partnerships and Collaborations: Strategic partnerships, such as that between High Lander and INVOLI, are crucial for developing comprehensive solutions that help address the complexities of managing mixed air traffic.

Fintraffic Sky, the groundbreaking air traffic management platform, is set to integrate advanced gadgets and data-and-cloud-computing technologies to streamline the submission of flight plans and enhance situational awareness for both piloted and drone-controlled vehicles. This collaboration between Solita, a German IT powerhouse, Fintraffic ANS, AstraUTM, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) aims to create a united framework for managing both manned and unmanned air traffic, ultimately ensuring the safe and effective integration of technology in the skies.
