Here's the lowdown, folks. The Nintendo Direct on Wednesday left me scratching my head about one thing - excitement for the return of Donkey Kong. Admittedly, I've never been a die-hard fan of the primate, but Donkey Kong Bananza is shaking things up.

Listen, I recently got my hands on the Nintendo Switch 2, and I've been waiting for the right games to come along to justify the investment. Well, Donkey Kong Bananza may just be the ticket. Developed by the brilliant minds behind Super Mario Odyssey, this game marks the first 3D Donkey Kong platformer since DK 64.

Now, I wouldn't shell out $500 for a console just to play Mario Kart, but I might be inclined to pay a pretty penny for a game as promising as Donkey Kong Bananza. Let me walk you through what I love about it.

Pre-order Donkey Kong Bananza now at Best Buy for only $69.

Dive into an action-packed adventure where you take control of Donkey Kong as he navigates the challenging Underground World to reclaim a lost horde of bananas. It's all a bit reminiscent of the beloved Donkey Kong Country series, but with a fresh twist of destruction and mayhem.

Release Date: July 17, 2025.

Donkey Kong Bananza: A Revolution in 3D Platforming

Think of Donkey Kong Bananza as a mashup of Mario's Super Mario Odyssey acrobatics and Link's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild adventurous spirit. As Donkey Kong, you can wreak havoc on almost everything surrounding you, from the ground beneath your feet to massive rock formations.

The level design, combat, and puzzle-solving require a creative approach to overcome obstacles and progress. And hey, who doesn't love making a mess and breaking things? Personally, it's the kind of fun I crave.

Take the guesswork out of solving puzzles or finding that perfect angle to jump, and watch as the environment destroys itself to help you reach hidden bananas or bonus areas. Is it a bit extreme? Absolutely, but isn't that what gaming is all about? The joy of destruction never gets old, especially when it helps you progress in the game.

In the Donkey Kong Bananza presentation, Nintendo finally shed light on the strange rock hanging out on Donkey Kong's back. Turns out it's none other than Pauline, the damsel-turned-companion who first appeared in the original Donkey Kong game way back in 1981. These days, she's a famous singer and mayor of New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey.

At first glance, Pauline seems to be a helpful addition to Donkey Kong's adventure. With her voice, she helps navigate the world and calls on abilities that allow Donkey Kong to smash tough terrain or glide through the sky as an ostrich.

But there's a catch - you can only play as Pauline when teaming up with a friend. When combined with the new Switch Multiplayer feature, you can experience a good chunk of Donkey Kong Bananza as Pauline while your buddy tackles the game as Donkey Kong. Plus, you can dress up both characters in stylish outfits to satiate your fashion fix.

The game also comes with a well-designed skill tree, offering a range of upgrades and abilities to customize the experience. Heck, I've always loved a good RPG, and this intuitive system promises hours of gameplay.

Initially, I wasn't convinced by the Donkey Kong Bananza reveal, but the latest Nintendo Direct has me ready to go bananas over this game. If only the Nintendo Switch 2 would restock soon enough!
