Renault Group Unveils Innovative Immersive Simulation Center
The Renault Group has taken a significant step forward in vehicle development with the inauguration of a new innovation center dedicated to immersive simulation. The state-of-the-art facility, named ROADS, is located in a dedicated hall of approximately 1,400 m² and 12 m high.
ROADS is a remarkable piece of engineering, mounted on powerful cylinders and sliding on rails measuring 25 meters by 25 meters. With a weight of 90 tonnes, it is capable of 1 G accelerations on each axis, providing a realistic and dynamic testing environment for vehicles.
At the heart of ROADS lies the digital twin, a digital double that combines the characteristics of a vehicle, road behavior modeling, and driving assistance systems and embedded software. This digital twin is tested in various conditions, with real drivers taking their place on board to ensure human feeling is essential in the testing process.
Engineers can evaluate behavior, performance, safety, driving aids, and more on a virtual or realistically reproduced road with ROADS. The simulation technology reproduces the dynamic behavior of any vehicle in various conditions, including road type, traffic density, interactions with other vehicles, altitude, weather, lighting, and more.
The Scenario Factory, a team dedicated to the digital reproduction of roads, plays a crucial role in this process. They can digitally reproduce real or imaginary roads, ensuring that every possible testing scenario is covered.
More than 70 engineers work at the new Immersive Simulation Center of Renault Group, with some engineers dedicated to the Scenario Factory. The company AV Simulation, owned by the French automotive supplier and simulation technology company, Siemens Digital Industries Software, contributed to the development of the Renault Operational Advanced Driving Simulator.
With ROADS, the Renault Group aims to push the boundaries of vehicle development and create safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable vehicles for customers. The immersive simulation center is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and its pursuit of excellence in the automotive industry.
