Restored mini-coral reefs boost marine life diversity in Denia harbor
Headline: Balearia Installs 10 Micro-Reefs in Denia Port to Combat Coastal Erosion
Denia, Costa Blanca North, Spain - Balearia, a leading shipping company, has recently installed 10 micro-reefs in the Balearia Port Maritime Station area. This initiative is part of a collaborative project launched by the Denia Port Consultative Board to combat the increasing coastal erosion caused by the busy port's construction and expansion.
The micro-reefs, designed by Ocean Ecostructures, are biomimetic structures that attract marine life and stimulate biodiversity without interfering with normal port operations. They are part of a larger project involving key port stakeholders such as Balearia, Marina Denia, Varadero Port Denia, the Fishermen’s Guild, Marina El Portet, and Nautica Noguera.
The goal of this project is to regenerate marine biodiversity in the port area, creating a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient marine environment. If left unaddressed, the erosion could further shrink beaches, negatively impacting both tourism and marine ecosystems.
The Bio Boosting System used in these micro-reefs is a pioneering technology aimed at large-scale marine biodiversity restoration. It has already shown successful results, hosting over 200 marine species. The micro-reefs are monitored using underwater drones, and all data is transmitted in real-time and available via the Ocean Ecostructures app.
The installation of these micro-reefs reinforces Balearia's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the protection of the marine environment. However, concerns remain about the long-term effectiveness of these measures. Residents argue for a more comprehensive approach, combining careful urban planning with environmental conservation.
Authorities have initiated projects to mitigate the damage, including reinforcing dunes and improving coastal barriers. The project in Denia port aligns with the European Union's target to protect 30% of waters by 2030.
Stay tuned for the latest news about Europe and Costa Blanca North as we continue to monitor the progress of this innovative micro-reef restoration project.
