Rohde & Schwarz Verifies Qualcomm's Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF for Next Gen eCall

Rohde & Schwarz, a leading German electronics company, has successfully verified the Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) functionality of Qualcomm's Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF using its CMX500 mobile radio tester. This collaboration sets a new benchmark for emergency call services in vehicles, ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency in emergency response systems.

The CMX500, supporting both 4G and 5G technologies, was used to confirm the compliance of the Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF's NG eCall features with the latest EN 17240:2024 specification. This testing was crucial as NG eCall over 4G/5G networks is required, replacing the obsolete 2G/3G networks used by the current eCall system, which has been mandatory in new EU cars since 2018.

The CMX500, with the CMX-KA098 software option, enables NG eCall testing under realistic network conditions. The collaboration between Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies aims to improve the safety and efficiency of emergency response systems in vehicles. The Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF, a 5G automotive-grade platform, supports high-speed connectivity, advanced positioning, and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology.

With the verification complete, NG eCall will become obligatory starting January 1, 2026, establishing guidelines for testing eCall systems over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) networks. Rohde & Schwarz's Vice President Market Segment Automotive, Juergen Meyer, praised the collaboration, stating it sets a new standard for emergency call services. The future of vehicle safety and emergency response systems looks promising with these advancements in technology and testing.
