Roshydromet Launches 'Ivan Frolov' Icebreaker for Arctic Research

Roshydromet Launches 'Ivan Frolov' Icebreaker for Arctic Research

Roshydromet, Russia's state hydrometeorological service, has laid the keel for a new vessel, 'Ivan Frolov'. This icebreaker, set to launch in late 2028, will become the flagship of Roshydromet's fleet and offer comfortable conditions for up to 240 people. Meanwhile, the 'Akademik Fedorov', currently on a drifting expedition in the Arctic, continues to collect data from previously unexplored territories.

The 'Ivan Frolov' is designed to accommodate around 20 laboratories, deck scientific equipment, a helipad, and hangar. It can independently break through ice up to one meter thick without icebreaker assistance and carry heavy helicopters. This vessel will join the fleet alongside the 'Northern Pole', which is currently on a mission to monitor climate changes and develop navigation along the Northern Sea Route.

The 'Northern Pole' station, operated by Roshydromet, can operate for months in harsh conditions, supporting 17 laboratories and accommodating over 30 specialists. Recently, expedition participants moved the station over 400 km, changing its drift direction to the 88th parallel north. This is part of the approximately 20 expeditions conducted annually in the Arctic and Antarctic by Russian scientists.

The launch of 'Ivan Frolov' in late 2028 will strengthen Roshydromet's capabilities in the Arctic, providing advanced research facilities and icebreaking support. This comes as the 'Northern Pole' continues its crucial work in monitoring climate changes and exploring previously unexplored territories.
