Royal Albert Hall Upgrades Intercom System with Riedel's Technology
Dive into the Latest Audio Upgrade at the Royal Albert Hall
VIBRANT WUPPERTAL, Germany-Riedel Communications has pulled off an exciting move, with London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall embracing its top-notch Bolero wireless intercom system. This add-on is part of the venue's ongoing mission to update their in-house audio gear and provide services of superior quality.
Placing communication at the heart of live performances, the Bolero intercom system sweeps performers and crews behind the scenes into a seamless conversation during live shows at the Royal Albert Hall.
Describing the seamless shift, Ben Evans, the audio operations manager at the iconic venue, shared, "We chose Bolero over other manufacturers for our permanent in-house wireless intercom. It's a straightforward system that delivers crystal-clear audio and flawlessly integrates with the gear most visiting productions bring. Its network-based flexibility and lack of complex licensing charges were major factors in our decision"
With a glorious history spanning 153 years, the Royal Albert Hall is a chameleon, adapting to diverse events, from rock/pop concerts and orchestral performances, to spoken word events, sports, ballets, ballroom dancing, book launches, and poetry readings. The whirlwind of events calls for a robust, adaptable communication system, and the Bolero fits the bill perfectly.
The Royal Albert Hall's technical prowess, encompassing lighting, rigging, audio, communications, attracts high-profile productions like a magnet. To enhance the venue's technical supremacy, it formed an in-house audio team in 2018. The team partnered with audio giant, d&b audiotechnik, for a permanent PA system, investing in sound desks, microphones, and monitors to follow suit. The cherry on top was the perfect communications system.
"Building a reputation as a trusted technical partner in the events industry, Riedel's Bolero adds another layer to our technique-rich layer cake and fortifies our revenue generation," Evans explained.
Riedel Communications prides itself on delivering more channels, a superior infrastructure, and broader range, compatibility, and connectivity than the Hall's old system. The system is exceptionally adaptable to various event needs, with interoperability ensuring seamless integration with other equipment. In times of trouble, an encounter with technical woes during a show, the crew can effortlessly switch to the Royal Albert Hall's Bolero system, ensuring that the show must go on!
Employed daily as both a production communications and talkback system, the Bolero system transcends traditional stage teams and show callers. The system offers a "shout system" that streams the communication between front-of-house and monitor engineers, while various communication rings facilitate interaction among lighting/show callers, audio teams, and production crews. The venue can expand the size of the system for large productions by adding extra rings.
For instances when a massive-scale event demands more than the Hall's existing inventory of 10 wireless packs, the venue can swiftly scale up by renting additional packs or antennas. For example, the 2024 Olivier Awards required 30 packs, plus additional Riedel Artist mainframes and panels. In that scenario, the in-house system synchronized with a large Artist setup catering to over 30 users across multiple locations.
Nacho Lee, program manager of global events at Riedel Communications, shared his enthusiasm about the project. "We take pride in being part of the Royal Albert Hall's technical excellence and reliability. Visiting productions can trust Bolero to work with whatever equipment they bring in, freeing teams to focus on the technical aspects of events without worrying about communication failures."
