Seniors Learn to Spot Phone Scams at Kluftern Event
Around 160 senior men and women gathered in Kluftern for an informative and entertaining event. The afternoon, titled 'Crime Scene Phone', aimed to educate seniors about telephone scammer tricks. Mayor Dieter Stauber and local representative Michael Nachbaur welcomed the guests, highlighting the importance of staying informed about these deceptive methods.
Tanja Abele, commissioner for families and seniors in the department of society, education, and social affairs, organized the event. Achim Kruzinski from the police prevention department shared insights into telephone scammer tactics, which often target older people. Scammers may pose as police officers or trusted persons, using dramatic stories about relatives or friends in emergencies to obtain cash or valuables.
The police never demand money or valuables over the phone, and revealing too many personal details can be used against victims. Practical tips were provided to help seniors avoid becoming victims of such scams. The event was musically accompanied by the police orchestra, and two actors, former police officers, performed to educate the audience about protecting themselves against common fraud attempts. Coffee and cake were served for the guests.
