Shandong Enhances Offshore Wind Grid Connections with World-First 220kV Solution
The Energy Administration of Shandong province has partnered with a leading global supplier to enhance offshore wind grid connections. The project, using the Grid-eXpand™ solution, will transmit power from 71 wind turbines to the mainland grid, generating 1.5 billion kWh annually and saving substantial coal and carbon emissions.
The Grid-eXpand™ solution, provided by the world's leading supplier of offshore wind grid connection solutions, increases voltage from 35 kV to 220 kV. This is a significant milestone, as it was also used in China's first 220-kilovolt modular and prefabricated offshore grid connection at the 500-megawatt Shandong Peninsula South V wind farm.
The solution offers numerous benefits. It cuts delivery time by eight weeks compared to conventional methods, reduces the size and weight of the grid connection platform by 30% and 20% respectively, and lowers both capital and operating costs. These advantages are particularly crucial in the current market, where the Chinese offshore wind industry faces huge cost pressures due to the end of attractive feed-in tariffs. The global offshore wind market is booming, with China installing 80% of the new offshore wind capacity added globally in 2021.
The Grid-eXpand™ solution, used in the Shandong project, demonstrates a more efficient and cost-effective way to transmit offshore wind power. It is expected to generate significant annual savings in coal and carbon emissions, contributing to China's renewable energy goals.
