Subscription fees on Spotify rise

Music streaming giant Spotify has announced that it will be increasing the prices of its Premium subscription plans in several regions around the world. The affected regions include Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The price hike, which will take effect in September 2023, will see the Premium subscription prices rise from €10.99 to €11.99 per month in these regions. This translates to approximately $13.86 USD equivalent.

The increase does not apply to all regions globally, as Spotify has yet to provide details on the price tiers for countries such as Germany.

In a statement, Spotify framed the price rise as part of a strategy to improve margins and support future innovation in product features. Email notifications were sent to impacted subscribers ahead of the price adjustment.

It is worth noting that the price increase does not affect the free version of Spotify, which offers ads-supported streaming. Spotify also offers subscription models for students, two users, and families.

The number of paying subscribers on Spotify currently stands at 276 million. The company, which is the clear leader in music streaming, has seen a steady growth in its user base over the years.

In North America, the prices remain unchanged at $12 per month as of late 2024/early 2025. However, the U.S. had earlier separate price increases in 2023 and 2024, with the Premium Individual plan at $12 per month as of mid-2024.

Spotify's announcement comes as the company continues to invest in new features and services to enhance the user experience. The company has been making strides in areas such as podcasts, original content, and social features.

In conclusion, the key update is a €1 monthly increase in many global regions outside the U.S. and Canada, pushing Premium prices to roughly €11.99 per month (near $14), while North American prices remain unchanged at $12 as of late 2024/early 2025. Subscribers in the affected regions will soon be notified of the new prices.
