Tbilisi Launches Reuse Systems to Cut Plastic Waste

Tbilisi is set to reduce single-use packaging with two innovative reuse system pilots launching in June 2024. Fabrika, a multifunctional urban space, and CAMPA, a Georgian beverage company, are leading these initiatives, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions and empower women in local circular economies.

Fabrika's system, starting on October 1, 2025, encourages customers to leave a 3 GEL deposit for a reusable cup and token. Upon return, the deposit is refunded. This move aims to replace up to a million discarded plastic cups annually.

CAMPA, in partnership with Tbilisi International Airport and Cavea cinemas, is collecting, cleaning, and reusing empty glass bottles. Their system involves partners returning bottles to CAMPA's facility for reuse. Both systems are part of a global effort to promote sustainable urban living and systemic cooperation.

These pilots, implemented by CENN with support from GIZ and ICLEI, are financially backed by the European Union. They aim to strengthen climate resilience and support a just transition in Georgia. By reducing single-use packaging, these initiatives contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable Tbilisi.
