In a surprising turn of events, Tesla has discontinued the Range Extender option for its Cybertruck, a move that was announced in May 2025. The decision comes after multiple delays, lower-than-expected demand, and technical issues, which have reportedly led to Tesla focusing on other vehicle options instead.

Initially, the Range Extender was planned to launch in early 2025 but was delayed to mid-2025. The option, which was tool-box-sized and took up roughly one-third of the truck bed, promised a significant boost in range, with an estimated 470+ miles for the All-Wheel Drive variant. However, updated specs show a reduction in the Range Extender's efficiency compared to original estimates, suggesting Tesla's testing under EPA conditions revealed lower real-world gains.

The Range Extender, priced at around $16,000, was a high-ticket item that required a $2,000 reservation deposit. Despite the high price tag, many fans were disappointed with the Cybertruck's released range of around 325 miles (523km). Fans suggested that the Range Extender should have been a flat design that maintained the utility of the truck bed, rather than the awkward design that shortened the bed.

One proposed mockup showed the Range Extender taking up the entire length of the bed, unlike the current design. However, as of now, the Range Extender is no longer available for order, and there is no new public timeline for its return. The Cybertruck's specs page still lists the Range Extender, but it is absent from the order page.

The discontinuation of the Cybertruck Range Extender reflects Tesla's response to market conditions and technical challenges. It is currently unclear if the Range Extender will return in the future. Tesla has not provided any information about the possible cost of the redesigned Range Extender, should it return.

The Cybertruck, originally advertised with a range of 500 miles (804km), has faced criticism for its disappointing released range. With the Range Extender discontinued, Tesla will have to find other ways to improve the Cybertruck's range and appeal to its fanbase.
