Tested Nvidia's AI computer assistant: Slightly beneficial, yet not significantly impressive to justify installation
In the realm of modern computing, power and complexity often go hand in hand. Nvidia, a leading name in the tech industry, aims to simplify this experience with its AI PC assistant, Nvidia G-Assist.
Currently, the initial version of Nvidia G-Assist offers mild utility, but it's not without its issues and bugs. These glitches can range from the assistant failing to respond to voice commands, requiring a restart, to the textbox not displaying, necessitating the user to quit and relaunch the app.
However, Nvidia is gearing up for a significant update to Project G-Assist, scheduled for September 2025. This update will introduce laptop-specific tools to aid with NVIDIA BatteryBoost and Battery OPS. The exact version number of this 2025 update has yet to be specified, but it follows an August 19, 2025 update available via the NVIDIA App, which boasts improved AI models for RTX GPUs.
One of the key features of Nvidia G-Assist is its voice command functionality, controlled via a push-to-talk button. It can assist with a range of PC settings, including optimising games and charting frames, via basic voice or text commands. In some cases, the AI assistant can complete requests quicker than if done manually, although this is not always the case.
For simpler commands like starting or stopping a recording, using the Nvidia app's hotkey is more efficient. For more complicated tasks like updating drivers or setting fan speed, the AI assistant can be helpful but is not necessary as these tasks can be completed within the Nvidia app.
Using voice commands to adjust settings in game is faster than typing requests, making gameplay more seamless. Users can type requests into a textbox or press a hotkey to access the AI PC assistant.
At IFA 2025, Nvidia is showcasing Project G-Assist, an AI assistant for PCs, powered by RTX graphics cards. The current experimental phase (patch 0.1.17) of the software felt unfinished during a recent walkthrough. Yet, Nvidia is confident that Project G-Assist will become a better service with bug fixes and more functionality.
For now, Nvidia G-Assist may be worth skipping but should not be completely written off. As the software undergoes refinement and improvement, it could prove to be a valuable tool in the PC gaming landscape. A full list of Nvidia G-Assist's functions can be found on the Nvidia website.
