Testing Tesla's Model Y: Does it Deliver as Advertised?
Updated Tesla Model Y: A Closer Look at the Enhanced Electric SUV
After receiving a facelift, the Tesla Model Y aims to maintain its appeal in the ever-growing electric vehicle market. The revised version, now dubbed Juniper, has undergone some exterior changes and hardware adjustments. With the introduction of the Dual Motor drive, ntv.de had the opportunity to test the overhauled Model Y for the first time.
Initial encounters with the revised Model Y could be confusing, as the continuous light strips on the front make it less evident that it is a Tesla. Gazing at the back, however, leaves no doubt as to the vehicle's affiliation, despite the light strip. The large branding on the rear aids in identification.
Familiar aspects of the Tesla interior include the central control unit, or touchscreen, remaining the eye-catcher. Now, drivers select driving modes on a touch-sensitive monitor, similar to the Model S facelift. This electronic feature raises concerns about its longevity, as if it were to fail after a few years, only a manual "D" switch on the brake pedal remains for activation.
In terms of performance, the Model Y Dual Motor accelerates briskly, especially with all-wheel drive and the largest battery, although the battery capacity remains undisclosed. The standard sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is quoted as 4.8 seconds. The vehicle's power is apparent in everyday driving, although it builds a noticeable braking moment when reaching speeds of over 200 km/h. This could potentially be improved in the Performance model with a higher speed.
The Model Y facelift boasts improved suspension comfort, thanks to chassis modifications, making for smoother rides over uneven roads. Other modifications include the return of traditional steering wheel levers for turning signals, two wireless smartphone charging trays, and stylish ambient lighting in various colors. However, the illuminated front LED strip may cause glare on the windshield in the dark.
Noteworthy, the Model Y still lacks the long-anticipated 800-volt charging architecture, although rapid-charging performance is an increasingly important consideration as competition heightens. The price pressure is also mounting. While the base Model Y starts at 45,970 euros, with substantial power and space, competition is rising, led by the Škoda Enyaq, the Smart #5, and the Xpeng G6, all offering competitive charging performance at lower prices.
In conclusion, the 2025 Model Y offers a well-rounded electric SUV package at a fair price. However, the expanding electric vehicle market and increasing competition may challenge Tesla's dominance, prompting the need for substantial innovations to maintain its position.
