The Prospect of 'Star Wars Battlefront' in the Coming Days

Star Wars Battlefront Fans Aim to Revive the Series with Global Event

Fueled by the recent resurgence of interest in Star Wars Battlefront II and the upcoming May 4 holiday, gamers and enthusiasts are rallying for a third installment of the popular multiplayer shooter series. A global day-long event is planned to demonstrate the enduring fanbase's support for the game, aiming to boost player numbers.

The renewed interest in the series stems from Star Wars actor Muhannad Ben Amor, who played Wilmon in the recent Disney+ series Andor, publicly expressing his desire for a new Battlefront game. Other collaborative efforts to bring back the franchise have emerged within the gaming community, with some calling for a remaster of the original game or a sequel developed by members of the previous team.

Originally created by Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts, the first two Star Wars Battlefront games were released during the Star Wars prequel era. However, subsequent entries from Battlefield developer DICE never reached a third iteration. Several attempts at a third game were made, including projects from Timesplitters creator Free Radical Design and an online-only entry and smaller scale multiplayer game from LucasArts that ultimately did not materialize.

The success of Star Wars gaming has been a mixed bag, with numerous promising titles never seeing the light of day, such as the Boba Fett-starring 1313 or third entries for Knights of the Old Republic and Force Unleashed. Even Electronic Arts, the current holder of the Star Wars game license, has had its own share of cancellations, including a pirate-focused project from Visceral Games and Motive Studios and a first-person shooter centered on a Mandalorian from Respawn.

As of now, DICE is focusing solely on the next Battlefield game, making a new Star Wars Battlefront from EA unlikely, if not impossible, in the near future. Senior live producer Mats Holm, who worked on Battlefront II, proposed the idea of a remaster as a potential stepping stone for a sequel, with the involvement of members from the previous team being a high priority. However, Electronic Arts may be selective in choosing which games to remaster or remake.

Recent Star Wars games have focused on single-player titles, such as Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws and the upcoming Starfighter film from Bit Reactor. The controversial monetization system in Battlefront II has caused EA to be cautious about investing in Star Wars multiplayer games, while the Fortnite x Star Wars collaboration has cemented the battle royale game as the franchise's dominant multiplayer shooter.

The potential for a new Star Wars Battlefront game depends on Electronic Arts' future plans and the reception of other Star Wars titles. A new Battlefront game would likely address the criticisms of its predecessors, such as improved single-player content and more balanced multiplayer progression systems. The success of recent Star Wars games suggests that there is still a strong interest in the gaming universe, making a new Battlefront title a viable option if EAchooses to continue the series. As of now, there are no official updates on a potential third installment.
