Transdev United Kingdom has been recognised for its innovative approach to sustainable public transport, winning the Best Bus Innovation trophy at the national E-Mobility Awards. The award-winning project, which involves the introduction of a zero emission bus fleet on the 36 route between Harrogate, Leeds, and Ripon, is part of a broader £21 million investment programme.

The project, selected as the winning innovation, includes the introduction of 19 new Alexander Dennis Enviro 400EV double deck electric buses and 20 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro single-deck electric buses. These buses are custom engineered to provide high performance in both busy urban areas like Leeds and Harrogate, and rural sections of the route, covering over 100,000 km (62,100 miles) annually with over two million customer journeys per year.

The depot in Harrogate was fully re-equipped with new technology to power and maintain these vehicles, supported by £7.8 million in government funding secured with the partnership of North Yorkshire Council. Key features of the fleet include high reliability and customer satisfaction on the premium route connecting Harrogate, Leeds, and Ripon.

The Enviro 400EV electric buses offer a level of luxury unlike anything else on Britain's bus routes. The upper deck features a glazed staircase, a two-plus-one seating layout, glazed roof panels, and wireless mobile device charging. The lower deck has two dedicated wheelchair spaces and high-visibility flooring and lighting.

The unveiling of the first new electric double-deck bus for The 36 took place in June 2024 in front of Harrogate's prestigious Yorkshire Hotel. To celebrate the launch, a free family party featuring red and black ice creams and locally brewed beer was held. The e-Mobility Awards presentation took place at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Transdev United Kingdom's investment in zero emission technology is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable public transport. The project demonstrates the company's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, making it a worthy recipient of the Best Bus Innovation trophy.
