Unveiling the mystery behind Time AI, the AI-focused German tech company brimming with former Palantir personnel.
In the world of startups, the Y-Combinator is often referred to as the "holy cathedral" of the scene. For Leopold von Waldthausen, this hallowed ground held a memorable, if unconventional, encounter ten years ago.
At the age of 19, von Waldthausen had already graduated from school and founded his first startup, Weview - a video review platform for product reviews. His ambitions led him to the Y-Combinator in 2024, where he made a daring move. On the day of the demo days, he managed to sneak in using the demo day badge of Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI and the man leading the Y-Combinator at the time. This audacious act earned him a photo with Altman's name tag as a memento.
The incident, however, did not deter von Waldthausen. Instead, it seemed to fuel his determination. In the same year, he founded another startup, Zeit AI, which he presented to the Y-Combinator. This time, he was honest about his past, using the story of his sneaky entry as part of his application for the Summer Batch 2024.
Despite the controversy, Zeit AI found success. After eight weeks of development, they created their first product. After ten weeks, they won their first major customers, primarily from industries such as the automotive industry and agricultural trading.
The success of Zeit AI is a significant achievement for von Waldthausen, given his past experiences with the Y-Combinator. It's also worth noting that Palantir plays a role in Zeit AI's success, as many talents from Palantir are involved in the German AI startup. They bring their experience from Palantir into the development of AI solutions at Zeit AI.
The creation and initial success of Zeit AI occurred nearly ten years after von Waldthausen's controversial entry into the Y-Combinator. While the two events are separate, they are undeniably linked, marking a remarkable journey for the young entrepreneur.
