Orihuela Upgrades Waste Collection Fleet for Improved Services

In a significant move towards modernizing its urban waste management system, the city of Orihuela has invested €1.2 million in purchasing and presenting four new solid waste collection trucks. The acquisition is part of a larger fleet renewal aimed at enhancing the lives of residents and workers in the city.

The new trucks, showcased in a ceremony held in the historic center of Orihuela, are designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of waste collection. With modern compaction systems and GPS tracking, these vehicles are expected to handle the high volume of waste, particularly during the summer months in the coastal urbanisations, more effectively.

The upgrade from the outdated fleet is expected to improve the quality and timeliness of garbage collection in Orihuela. With over 1,600 waste containers in the city set to benefit from this upgrade, the city is poised to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.

Mayor Pepe Vegara highlighted the fleet renewal as a response to residents' and workers' demands for a modern, safe, and sufficient service. Solid Waste Councillor Rocío Ortuño noted that the new vehicles will also improve working conditions for waste collection staff.

The new trucks, which come with a two-year warranty for reliability, are expected to join forces with another truck (number 5) after registration completion. The fleet renewal is a demonstration of Orihuela's dedication to improving waste management and complements the recent improvements in the city's waste management system.

Despite the initial criticism from some residents who viewed the public presentation as an extravagant spectacle, the core intent of upgrading the fleet is to improve municipal services. The new trucks, equipped with modern compaction systems and GPS tracking, are expected to contribute significantly to the overall improvement of garbage collection in Orihuela, ultimately improving the lives of residents and workers in the city.
