US Data Centers to Consume Up to 12% of Electricity by 2028
A recent study, details of which remain elusive, suggests a significant increase in the number of data centers in the USA by 2028. Meanwhile, the US Department of Energy warns that these facilities could consume up to 12% of the nation's electricity in the next three years.
As of March 2025, the USA boasted over 5,400 data centers. This figure is a stark contrast to Germany's 529, highlighting the USA's more than 10 times higher data center density. A decade ago, data centers accounted for around 1% of grid demand, a figure that has since grown exponentially. Experts express concern about the increasing energy consumption of these facilities.
The US Department of Energy's prediction underscores the need for energy-efficient data center practices. As the number of data centers continues to rise, so too must efforts to manage their substantial electricity demand.
