VinFast's Decision to Establish EV Manufacturing Plant in Tamil Nadu Indicates Confident Expansion Strategy
VinFast Sets Record with Rapid EV Manufacturing Plant Construction in Tamil Nadu, India
VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) maker, has established a new record in India by completing the construction of its manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu in just 17 months. This is the fastest manufacturing scale-up by any foreign carmaker in India, beating the typical 24 to 36 months required for such plants.
The plant, which spans approximately 400 acres, was inaugurated in August 2025, less than a year after groundbreaking in February 2024. The facility is equipped with advanced robotics and automation, meeting Industry 4.0 standards, and is expected to create between 3,000 and 3,500 direct jobs.
The plant's initial production capacity is 50,000 vehicles annually, with plans to scale up to 150,000 units. It is seen as a significant boost to exports to South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, with orders from Sri Lanka and Mauritius already confirmed.
The location of the plant was carefully chosen, prioritizing factors such as port access, infrastructure, workforce availability, and active cooperation from the Tamil Nadu government, which facilitated rapid construction. An adjacent industrial zone will nurture local suppliers and create a broader manufacturing ecosystem.
The factory features a Body Shop with 17 robots working alongside skilled welders and assemblers. Smart torque tools and 3D measurement systems verify parts before they move forward within the factory. The Paint Shop uses eight robots to apply consistent finishes, layer after layer.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa stated that the state provided all necessary facilities to attract VinFast, reaffirming Tamil Nadu's progressive industrial policies and contributing to local economic advancement, job creation, and technical skill development.
VinFast partnered with ABB, Durr, Atlas Copco, Arrow, and Siemens to integrate automation and quality control systems into the plant. A Manufacturing Execution System tracks each stage within the factory, ensuring efficient and seamless production.
This record-breaking speed sets a new benchmark globally, as industry experts noted the fastest previously observed vehicle plant construction was about 24 months. The plant supports India’s ambitions for widespread EV adoption and climate goals while establishing Tamil Nadu as a thriving EV manufacturing hub.
