Volvo Energy Unveils Robust PU2000 BESS for Commercial & Industrial Use

Volvo Energy has unveiled the PU2000, a robust battery energy storage system (BESS) tailored for commercial and industrial sectors. The system, launched in 2025, offers 1 MW of power and 2 MWh of capacity, housed in a 20-foot ISO container.

The PU2000 operates in a wide temperature range, from -20°C to +40°C, with an extended derating range of -30°C to +50°C. It uses lithium-ion nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) cells with liquid cooling, chosen for their high energy density and performance. The decision to use NCA technology was made by Volvo Energy, part of the Volvo Group.

The system supports both grid-connected and island mode operation, ensuring reliability even during power outages. It offers remote access via a 4G SIM card, enabling real-time monitoring and control. The PU2000 features IP55 protection and includes safety measures like smoke detection and an active fire suppression system.

The PU2000 is an AC block design, integrating power conversion, site controller, metering, and switchgear in an all-in-one configuration. It operates at 400 V (AC) with a 50 Hz grid connection and delivers round-trip efficiency above 90%. The system is designed for easy deployment, with a containerized design for quick installation and minimal site preparation.

Volvo Energy's cloud-based energy management system (EMS) offers seamless integration with EV charging infrastructure and participation in energy markets. The PU2000 is expected to last over 6,000 cycles with a 94% depth of discharge.

The PU2000, launched by Volvo Energy in 2025, is a powerful and reliable battery energy storage system designed for commercial and industrial sectors. With its wide operating temperature range, robust safety features, and high round-trip efficiency, the PU2000 is poised to meet the diverse energy storage needs of businesses and industries.
