Warnings issued by KIUC regarding misleading statements by solar PV firms in the island area
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Warns Members About False Solar Claims
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is alerting its members about false and misleading claims from certain solar installation companies. The utility cooperative is concerned about members being pressured or scammed by solar contractors, who have been claiming that customers with solar PV plus battery systems could avoid disruption, which may not be accurate.
The false claims made by solar installation companies could potentially mislead KIUC members about their energy options and potential disruptions. KIUC encourages its members to contact them first when considering a solar PV system. Members can report unprofessional conduct by solar contractors to KIUC.
"We support our members' interest in renewable energy and solar power, but we have been made aware of cases where solar sales representatives are giving customers false impressions," said Amaro from KIUC. He suggests that members get an overview of KIUC's requirements before talking with a solar contractor.
KIUC does not partner with or work with just one solar contractor. Members are encouraged to contact KIUC directly to verify any information provided by third-party contractors before signing contracts or making financial commitments. Some answers to frequently asked questions about solar PV systems can be found on the KIUC website.
KIUC has received reports of solar PV and battery system salespersons providing inaccurate or incomplete information about KIUC's electric grid, rates, and programs. Some of these sales representatives have been telling people that KIUC will de-energize their neighborhood, which is not true.
It is important to note that there is no publicly verified information naming specific solar companies on Kauai that have made false and misleading claims about KIUC shutting off power and protecting customers with solar and battery systems. KIUC did not name the solar companies making these false and misleading claims.
Members who encounter such activities should provide as much information as possible about the interaction, including the solar contractor's name, representative's name, date and time of interaction, and location. Members can call KIUC at 808-246-4300 to report such activities.
KIUC is not endorsing any specific solar product or service. The utility cooperative is simply advising its members to be cautious and verify information from third-party contractors before making decisions about solar installations. By taking these precautions, KIUC members can ensure they make informed decisions about their energy choices.
