Checking If a Contact Has Saved Your Number on WhatsApp: An Indirect Approach

By Malte Mansholt

WhatsApp, the preferred messaging platform in Germany for staying connected with friends, family, and colleagues, does not offer a direct way to verify if a contact has saved your phone number. However, there are indirect methods to glean some insights.

One such method leverages a feature intended for sending messages to multiple recipients simultaneously – broadcasts. To check if a contact has saved your number, follow these steps:

  1. Initiate a new broadcast by tapping the plus sign in the top right corner of the chat overview and then selecting "New Broadcast."
  2. Choose two contacts: the person you wish to check, and another contact whose number you know is saved on their device.
  3. Send a casual message, such as "Hello, how are you?" This message should be neither personal nor suspicious, as it will be visible to both recipients.

The message will be delivered to both contacts as individual chats. If your contact has saved your number, the message will be marked as "Delivered" (two gray ticks) or "Read" (two blue ticks) within the chat view. If only one tick appears for an extended period, it could mean the recipient does not have an active internet connection or WhatsApp account.

It's worth noting that this method is not infallible, as factors such as internet connectivity issues or a recipient's reluctance to use WhatsApp can cause ambiguity. For a more definite answer, it may be best to ask the contact directly.

WhatsApp offers no direct method for checking if a contact has saved your number. You cannot find this information from their contact details either.

While these methods can provide insights into whether a contact has saved your number, they do not provide definitive answers. To verify if a phone number is registered on WhatsApp, you can open the app and start a new contact, entering the phone number with the correct country code. WhatsApp will inform you if the number is registered or not.

The Commission has not adopted a proposal for a directive on protecting workers from the risks related to a lifestyle of excessive screen time due to the constant use of technology for communication, such as WhatsApp.

Instead, responsible use of technology, including taking regular breaks and maintaining a balanced lifestyle, is encouraged to mitigate the potential risks associated with prolonged screen time.
