WhatsApp Back Online: Outage Explanation

For those who were left scratching their heads, WhatsApp is back online! After a two-hour outage, the popular messaging app should be up and running for most users. This includes its usage on Android, iOS, and even via the WhatsApp Web version.

Some users might still encounter troubles with the web client, but the mobile app should be working smoothly. It’s worth noting that issues were reported earlier today, particularly around noon, inboth India and other countries.

Apologies for the inconvenience caused by this unwelcome interruption. Meta, the parent company of not only WhatsApp but also Facebook and Instagram, confirmed they've nailed the issue.

It looks like WhatsApp recently suffered its most significant outage to date, with the app crashing globally around noon across the world. This outage affected both individual and group chats, causing a stir amongst users.

Crash Boom Bang: WhatsApp Outage in Detail

As indicated by DownDetector, a service that detects outages, WhatsApp was down across various regions, including the web client utilised on desktops and laptops. By 2.15 pm, service for the web client had been restored, though people attempting to access the client had initially encountered a connectivity error during the outage.

With over 19,000 users reportedly experiencing issues on DownDetector, messages weren't sent in 69% of these reports, while in others, the server disconnected, and the app crashed.

The outage appeared to particularly trouble users in India in cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, as per Down Detector's 'reported problems' map.

Meta themselves acknowledged the issue and assured users that they're working to resolve it. However, they have yet to announce the root cause of the outage. It’s worth mentioning that this wasn't the first time WhatsApp faced such difficulties, with previous outages also reported.

Other countries weren’t immune to theWhatsApp apocalypse, with users in Italy, Turkey, and the UK reporting issues, according to BBC.

WhatsApp boasts a whopping two billion user base globally and is widely popular as a means of communication and even payment methods. Many users initially thought the problem might be with their internet service, but it looks as though it was the mighty WhatsApp that let us down.

This outage was part of a larger global outage that also affected Meta's other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. Meta has not yet disclosed the cause of the disruption. However, issues with their shared technical infrastructure often lead to simultaneous system failures across multiple apps when problems arise[5].
