World Tourism and Travel Council Holds First Virtual Annual General Meeting, Welcoming Over 120 Members and Ambassadors

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) recently hosted its first virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together over 120 CEOs from around the world to discuss the pressing challenges facing the Travel & Tourism sector.

In her opening remarks, WTTC President & CEO, Gloria Guevara, highlighted the unprecedented impact the pandemic has had on the sector, stating that millions of people's livelihoods have been indeed affected. She praised the entire WTTC team for their tireless work in bringing attention to the crisis and being the voice of the sector.

During the meeting, Chris Nassetta, President & CEO of Hilton and WTTC Chair, chaired the proceedings. WTTC Ambassadors Taleb Rifai, Michel Taride, Michael Frenzel, and Peter Greenberg were also in attendance.

A key priority for the WTTC was the endorsement of the G20 Guidelines for Action on Safe and Seamless Travel. Last week, the G20 endorsed these guidelines in its 'G20 Declaration'. The guidelines aim to facilitate safe and seamless travel, a crucial step towards reviving the Travel & Tourism sector.

In August, the WTTC sent letters to the Heads of State of the G7, Australia, South Korea, and Spain, calling for strong leadership and effective international collaboration to resume travel jobs near me safely. The specific persons involved in the recent G20 declaration supporting continued cooperation with stakeholders to revive the travel and tourism sector and endorsing G20 guidelines for safe and smooth travel are not listed explicitly.

The WTTC also presented its ground-breaking 100 million Jobs Recovery Plan during the meeting. The plan outlines the steps necessary to restart international travel safely and seamlessly, with the ultimate goal of recovering the 140 million plus jobs impacted by the pandemic.

Gloria Guevara also emphasised the need for the sector to come together in a globally coordinated way to ensure the recovery process is swift and painless. She commended the G20 Leaders for recognising the importance of working with the private sector and the role that Travel & Tourism will play in the recovery and bringing back millions of jobs.

In a positive development, Spain will be hosting an event in La Palma, next week, to advance key actions to restart the Travel & Tourism sector and enhance international collaboration. The WTTC Members are committed to continuing their work together to achieve this key objective.

Contributions were made during the meeting by several members, including Gary Chapman, Jeffrey C Rutledge, Jerry Noonan, Darrell Wade, Jane Sun, Desireé Bollier, Manfredi Lefebvre, Arnold Donald, Alex Zozaya, and Hiromi Tagawa.

The conclusion of the meeting was that restarting international travel in a safe and seamless way is vital to recover the jobs lost due to the pandemic. The WTTC will continue its efforts to ensure this goal is achieved.
