Yasa, the British Electric Motor Specialist, Transitions to Industrial Production

Yasa, a British company that has been part of the Mercedes-Benz group since 2021, is making a significant move towards industrial production. This transition is aimed at achieving economies of scale and opening up new markets.

Based in Oxfordshire, Yasa specializes in axial flux motors, which are known for their flat disc shape. This design allows for particularly space-saving integration, especially in high-performance and hybrid vehicles.

The company's goal is to offer a scalable and modularly adaptable product portfolio that enables fast and cost-effective solutions. This approach is evident in their development of in-wheel drives, a move intended to save automakers development time and enable faster market introduction.

Yasa's motors, which are particularly light, compact, and powerful, could lead to a higher payload in delivery vehicles. The company's long-term strategy does not involve acting exclusively as part of Mercedes-Benz but as an independent provider, with aspirations to establish itself in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors.

Yasa's CEO, Miska, states the company's aim to be technologically leading and economically solid. This ambition is reflected in their expansion of their production site in Yarnton, England, with a capacity of up to 25,000 motors per year. This expansion allows Yasa to supply independent customers beyond the Mercedes group and enter new vehicle segments in the future.

Yasa is developing complete drive systems, known as Electric Drive Units, which include the motor, wheel set, inverter, oil pump, and thermal management system. The company's focus within a British funding project is to make conventional brakes partly obsolete with in-wheel drives, a development that could create new freedoms in vehicle architecture.

Yasa's motors are currently used in super sports cars from brands like AMG, Lamborghini, and Ferrari. The motors for Mercedes in the Concept AMG GT XX project are produced in Yasa's Berlin plant. However, there is no specific information available about the expected start of series production of in-wheel drives by Yasa.

The first demonstration vehicles with Yasa's in-wheel drives could appear in this decade, but series production is not expected until at least 2030. Yasa aspires to be an economically independent provider with its own customer portfolio and revenue streams in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors. The first step towards this goal was taken with the electric car project Concept AMG GT XX, a preview of a customer vehicle.
